Photographs symbolize the power of relationships, how Lily only has one picture of her mother but when she looks at it, she looks at it, she feels a strong power of love wash over her.
Beehives
Beehives symbolize the way the Calender sisters treat each other and how August is the "queen" and how she leads the sisters.
Photographs dont symbolize anything about relationships. Anybody can smile in a picture next to someone they hate. But i do agree that she does feel a strong power of love wash over her when she looks at the picture of her mother.
