I continued reading and realized that the "mother of thousands" isn't August it is Mary, and now it makes a lot more sense for me. In the end of chapter 8 Lily touches the statue of Mary's heart and prays to her. Lily says " I live in a hive of darkness, and you are my mother, I told her. You are the mother of thousands" What do you think the " I live in a hive of darkness" means?
I think Lily is speaking about her life because she still has no answers about what happened to her mother and she is hoping August does. I think the darkness means she is in hiding, waiting, hoping that she isn't found in the pink house.
I agree. I think Lily has just dug such a deep whole for herself and she can't get out of it. She's praying to Mary to help get her out of her hole. August could and most likely is the mortal form of Mary.
