Mouse Bones

Lily decided to take the mouse bones she found in the honey house and carry them around in her pocket. She didn't understand why she was doing that, she just felt she had to. I think she carried them around as a sense of comfort and something she could hold onto.

After Lily decides to put the mouse bones away and tie them with a red hair ribbon she asks herself how could a person get attached to mouse bones? she answers her question saying, "I decided sometimes you just need to nurse something, that's all."

What do you think Lily means by that? How do you think the mouse bones made her feel better?

  1. I think that maybe the mouse bones were sort of representing herself in the way that some part of her had died from learning all that she did about her mother. But when she takes them out of her pocket, she is happier and I think she took them out because she didn't need them since that part had been fixed or reborn in a way.

  2. The mouse bones that Lily has could be a symbol for her mother Deborah, Deborah is dead and so is that mouse. Lily probably wants to forgive her mother for leaving her, so she finds something that represents her and ties the ribbon to show her forgiveness for Deborah.

  3. I think Lily kept the mouse bones because you always want to hold and keep something from someone who had gone from your life. Lily did this because she wants to have some connections with her mother who had gone from Lily's life.
